How to Roll a Joint, Step by Step
Everybody in this city can name a slice spot and nobody wants to admit they cannot roll. Here is the honest step-by-step, from grind to final twist, and the shortcut if your hands just do not cooperate.

The Short Answer
Grind, make a crutch, fill the paper, shape it, tuck and roll, then twist the tip. That is the whole move.
Your first few will look rough. That is normal. If rolling is just not your thing, pre-rolls do it all for you and taste exactly the same.
Rolling is a rite of passage, and almost nobody's first joint looks good. It comes out lumpy, too tight at one end, and burns down one side like a wet fuse. That is fine. Like every skill in this city, from parallel parking a car in the East Village to catching the local across the platform, you get it with reps. Here is the clean version so your reps actually improve.
What You Need
- Flower. Around a half gram to a gram for a standard joint.
- Rolling papers. Hemp or rice papers are the common pick. Beginners do better with a slightly wider paper.
- A grinder. An even grind is the single biggest thing separating a good joint from a bad one.
- A crutch, also called a tip or filter. A thin strip of card stock. Many paper packs include them.
- Optional: a rolling tray, or honestly a magazine or a plate so you are not chasing flower across the counter.
The Steps
1. Grind the flower
Break it down to an even, fluffy consistency, not powder and not big chunks. Uneven grind is why joints burn crooked. No grinder? Scissors in a shot glass work in a pinch.
2. Make your crutch
Take the thin strip of card, make a few tight accordion folds at one end, then roll the rest around it into a little tube. This keeps the end open, stops flower from falling in your mouth, and gives you something to hold as it burns down.
3. Fill the paper
Hold the paper with the glue strip up and facing you. Set the crutch at one end and spread your ground flower evenly along the crease. Do not overpack. A joint that is too full will not close.
4. Shape it
Pinch the paper and roll it back and forth between your fingers to pack the flower into an even cylinder. This shaping step is what people skip, and it is what makes the difference.
5. Tuck and roll
Tuck the edge of the paper without glue down and around the flower, then roll upward until only the glue strip shows. Lick the strip lightly, just a little moisture, and press it down as you finish the roll.
6. Pack and twist
Tap the crutch end on the table so the flower settles, top off any gap at the tip, and twist the open end shut. Done.
Common Mistakes
- Overfilling. The number one rookie error. Less flower rolls tighter and burns better.
- Uneven grind. Big chunks poke holes and make it burn down one side, what people call canoeing.
- Rolling too loose. A loose joint burns fast and harsh. Shape it firm before you tuck.
- Too much spit. A light touch on the glue. A soggy joint will not draw.
The Shortcut Nobody Should Feel Bad About
Here is the truth. Plenty of lifelong smokers never got good at rolling and just buy pre-rolls. They are rolled by machine, perfectly even, ready to go, and they taste like exactly what is inside them because that is what they are, the same flower in a paper. If you are heading to a show at the Garden or catching the ferry and do not want to fumble with papers on the go, a pre-roll is the move. We break down the tradeoff in are pre-rolls worth it.

Where you light up matters in New York. Public smoking follows the same rules as tobacco, and there are places it is off limits. See our guide on the New York rules.
