Weed Measurements Explained

Standing at the counter doing fraction math in your head while the line behind you grows. Here is every weed weight in plain English, from a single gram to a full ounce, and which one actually makes sense for you.

The Short Answer

Flower is sold on one ladder everywhere in New York: gram (1g), eighth (3.5g), quarter (7g), half (14g), and ounce (28g). Double the size, roughly double the grams.

The more you buy at once, the less each gram costs. New York lets adults 21+ carry up to 3 ounces, and a 13% tax lands on top at the register.

Nobody buys milk by the fluid dram or coffee by the scruple, but weed still trades in fractions of an ounce that go back generations. Walk into a shop in Hell's Kitchen, Chelsea, or the East Village and the budtender will rattle off gram, eighth, quarter like it is obvious. Once you see the ladder, it is. Here is the whole thing, no mystery.

The Weight Ladder, Top to Bottom

Flower is weighed in grams, and the common sizes are named the old way, as fractions of an ounce. This is the same at every licensed shop in the state, so learn it once and you are set from the Bronx to the Battery.

NameGramsWhat it is
Gram1gA single gram. One or two solid joints.
Eighth3.5gAn eighth of an ounce. The Manhattan default.
Quarter7gA quarter ounce. Two eighths.
Half14gHalf an ounce. Four eighths.
Ounce28gA full ounce. The biggest common size.

Every step up roughly doubles the weight. An eighth is where most people live.

Why the Eighth Rules the City

The eighth, 3.5 grams, is the size the whole city runs on, and it is not an accident. It is enough to actually get to know a strain without committing to an ounce of something that turns out to be too sleepy for a Tuesday. Think of it like ordering a slice before you commit to the whole pie. You find out if you like it before you are stuck with fourteen grams of it going stale in a drawer.

If you are brand new, start smaller. A gram tells you everything for a couple of bucks, and our first-time buyer guide walks through the rest of that first visit.

The Per-Gram Math That Matters

Here is the one money rule. The bigger the size, the less you pay per gram. A single gram is the priciest gram you will ever buy. An ounce is the cheapest. It is bulk pricing, same as anything else in this town, buy the family-size and the unit price drops.

  • Buying a gram at a time is convenient and the worst deal per gram.
  • An eighth is the sweet spot of price and freshness for most people.
  • An ounce is the best per-gram price and only a deal if you will finish it before it dries out.

That last point is the catch. The ounce looks like the smart buy on the sticker and turns into the worst buy on earth if half of it goes flat in your closet. Storage is part of the price, and we cover it in how to store weed.

Grams for Everything Else

Only flower uses the eighth-quarter-ounce language. The rest of the menu is simpler. Vapes come in half-gram and gram carts. Concentrates are sold by the gram, and a gram of concentrate costs a lot more than a gram of flower because it takes a pile of flower to make it. Edibles ignore weight entirely and go by milligrams of THC in the pack. Pre-rolls are sold by the roll, usually around a half gram to a gram each.

What You Can Legally Carry in New York

New York lets adults 21 and over hold up to 3 ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate on them for personal use. Three ounces is a lot, more than most people ever carry at once, so the legal limit is not something you will bump into on a normal dispensary run. Full detail is in our guide on how much weed you can legally carry in New York.

This is general information for Manhattan shoppers, not legal advice. Rules change. Check the current law before you rely on it.

Old Slang You Still Hear

You will catch older heads on a Harlem stoop still saying dime bag or dub. Those came from the pre-legal days when a dime meant ten dollars of weed and a dub meant twenty, priced by cash, not weight, because nobody was pulling out a scale on the corner. In a licensed shop none of that applies. Everything is weighed, labeled, and lab tested, and you buy by the gram and the eighth, not by the folded bill. The slang is history. The scale is the law now.

Measurements FAQ

Weed Weights, Answered

An eighth is 3.5 grams, which is an eighth of an ounce. It is the most common size sold in Manhattan and a good amount to try a new strain without overcommitting.
A quarter is 7 grams, a half is 14 grams, and an ounce is 28 grams. Each step up the ladder roughly doubles the previous size.
Per gram, the ounce is always the cheapest and a single gram is the most expensive. But the best value is the size you will actually finish before it dries out, which for most people is an eighth.
Adults 21 and over can carry up to 3 ounces of flower and 24 grams of concentrate for personal use under New York law. That is far more than a typical purchase.
Those are old slang from the pre-legal days, when weed was priced by cash rather than weight, a dime meaning ten dollars and a dub meaning twenty. Licensed shops sell by the gram and eighth instead.
No. Flower uses the gram and eighth ladder. Vapes and concentrates are sold by the gram, and edibles are sold by total milligrams of THC in the pack.
