Weed for Tourists in NYC
No medical card. No New York address. Just a photo ID that says 21.
Weed for tourists in NYC is simpler than most visitors expect: walk into a licensed dispensary with a passport or an out-of-state license and buy, same as a local. Cannadreams is at 862 9th Ave in Hell's Kitchen, a short walk from the Theater District and Restaurant Row on West 46th Street, and we deliver free to every Manhattan hotel.
Yes, You Can Buy, and Nothing Is Required Beyond ID
New York's adult-use law has no residency test. It does not ask where you live, it asks how old you are. Walk into a licensed dispensary with an unexpired government photo ID showing you are 21 or over and you can buy the same products a local buys, at the same prices, with no card, no registration, no doctor and no paperwork.
That surprises a lot of visitors, usually because they are thinking of the medical program. New York still runs one, and it does involve a card, but it is a separate system. Nothing on an adult-use menu touches it. If someone at a shop tells you that you need a card to buy, you are not in a licensed shop.
The part worth reading past this page is what New York counts as legal to carry and where you are allowed to use it. Those are covered in full in our guide to whether weed is legal in Manhattan.

The ID Question, Answered Properly
This is the single thing visitors get wrong, and it is the one thing that will actually turn you away at the door. Any unexpired government-issued photo ID showing your date of birth works. It does not have to be American.
What Works
Out-of-state driver license, US passport or passport card, foreign passport, foreign national ID card, US military ID, permanent resident card. Any state, any country.
Start shoppingWhat Does Not
A photo of your ID on your phone. An expired license. A student ID. A photocopy. A friend's ID. We check every one, and so does every other licensed shop.
Why licensing mattersOn Delivery
The driver checks the same ID at your door, and the name has to match the order. Have it out before you open the door and the handoff takes ten seconds.
How delivery worksWhere You Can, and Cannot, Smoke in the City
New York's rule is simpler than most states: cannabis follows the tobacco rule. If you can legally smoke a cigarette there, you can smoke cannabis there. If you cannot, you cannot. That single sentence covers most of what visitors ask, and the table below covers the places they ask about by name. This is a plain reading of the law, not legal advice, and private property owners can always set stricter rules than the city does.
| Place | Allowed? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sidewalks and streets | Generally yes | Same rule as tobacco. Common, and legal in most of the city. |
| Times Square | Generally yes | Sidewalks follow the tobacco rule. It is a crowded pedestrian plaza, so read the posted plaza signage. |
| Central Park and city parks | No | Smoking is banned in New York City parks, cannabis included. |
| Hotel rooms | Usually no | Almost every Manhattan hotel is non-smoking and will charge a cleaning fee. Edibles and drinks are the workaround. |
| Restaurants, bars, indoor venues | No | Indoor public spaces are covered by the Clean Indoor Air Act. |
| Cars, moving or parked | No | Illegal for driver and passengers alike, including a parked car on the street. |
| Near schools and playgrounds | No | Prohibited within 100 feet of a school and on playground grounds. |
| Subway and stations | No | MTA property, smoking prohibited throughout. |
If you are staying somewhere with a no-smoking policy, which is most Manhattan hotels, the practical answer is an edible or a drink. Nothing to light, no smell, nothing for housekeeping to find.

Is the Weed in New York Actually Real?
This question comes up because Midtown is full of storefronts selling cannabis without a license, and a visitor cannot tell them apart on sight. The difference is not cosmetic. It is the entire supply chain.
At a licensed dispensary
Everything is grown by a New York licensed farm, lab-tested for potency and contaminants, seed-to-sale tracked, and labeled with its exact THC content. That is what a state license buys you.
At an unlicensed shop
No testing requirement, no tracking, no accountability, and no one checking what is actually in the package. Products are frequently mislabeled and sometimes are not cannabis at all.
How to tell
Licensed shops post an OCM license number and carry the state's Dispensary Verification seal, a green sticker with a QR code you can scan. If a shop has neither, it is not licensed.
Why it matters on a trip
You are here for a few days and you do not know the neighborhood. Buying licensed is the one decision that removes the guesswork. More on this in our guide to licensed versus unlicensed dispensaries in NYC.
Shopping for a Short Trip
Buy small
You cannot fly home with it, so buy for the nights you are here, not for the suitcase. A single pre-roll or a 10-pack of gummies covers most trips better than an eighth you will not finish.
If your hotel is non-smoking
Which it almost certainly is. Edibles, drinks and tinctures produce nothing to smell and nothing to explain. A 10mg seltzer is $5 and behaves like a light drink.
If you want to know the sizes
American shops sell flower by the eighth, the quarter and the ounce, and the slang is not obvious. Our guide to weed measurements translates all of it, including what a given dollar amount usually gets you.
If you are budgeting
There is no entry fee and no minimum in store. Prices start at $5 for a drink and $13 for a pre-roll. Our breakdown of what weed costs in Manhattan has the full range, and a first order takes 20% off with code CANNADREAMS20.
Paying as a Visitor
Cannabis is still federally illegal, so most credit cards do not work at any American dispensary. That trips up visitors more than anything else. In store we take cash, check transfer, debit card, or Aeropay. Delivery orders must be prepaid with Aeropay or another approved method; cash is not accepted at the door. There is an ATM situation on most blocks around us if you need one.
Cash
Accepted in store only, not for delivery.
Check Transfer
Pay by check transfer.
Debit Card
Debit cards are accepted.
Aeropay
Pay with the Aeropay app.
