Concentrates are where the craft in this industry actually shows. Flower can be forgiving. An extract is a distillation of whatever went into it, so poor input material produces poor rosin and there is nowhere for it to hide. Cannadreams carries rosin, resin, badder, shatter, sugar, sauce and diamonds, delivered free to every neighborhood in Manhattan or ready for pickup at 862 9th Ave.
This is the first fork in the road and it matters more than consistency or brand.
Solventless extraction uses nothing but ice water, heat and pressure. Bubble hash is made by agitating flower in ice water so the trichome heads break away, then drying what is collected. Press that hash between heated plates and you get live rosin. No chemical is ever introduced, so nothing has to be removed afterwards.
Solvent based extraction uses hydrocarbons, usually butane or propane, to strip the resin from the plant, after which the solvent is purged. Done properly by a licensed processor it is safe and it produces excellent product, and it can pull yields that solventless methods cannot. Live resin is the best known example. The word live in either case means the plant was flash frozen fresh instead of dried and cured, which preserves the volatile terpenes.
Neither is automatically better. Solventless commands the higher price because yields are lower and it demands top tier starting material. Solvent based can be cleaner tasting than mediocre rosin.
The names describe texture, and texture is mostly a function of how the extract was agitated and cured after extraction. Chemically they are far closer to one another than the menu implies.
Shatter is stable and glassy and snaps. Badder and budder are whipped to an opaque, cake frosting texture. Sugar has crystallised into a wet, granular consistency. Sauce is a terpene rich liquid, usually with crystals suspended in it. Diamonds are crystallised THCA, often sold sitting in that sauce.
Pick on handling as much as flavour. Badder is the easiest thing to scoop. Shatter is the most awkward at room temperature and the tidiest when cold. Sauce is the messiest and often the most aromatic.
The single biggest improvement most people can make is to dab cooler. Terpenes vaporise between roughly 310 and 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Cannabinoids need a little more. Go much above 500 and you are combusting the good part and tasting the damage.
Aim for the low to mid 500s on your banger surface after the cool down, or use an e-rig with temperature control and start around 500. A low temperature dab produces less visible vapour and considerably more flavour. If your dab tastes acrid and leaves a black puddle, you went too hot. Clean the banger with a cotton swab while it is still warm and it stays clear.
Cold and dark. Extracts degrade with heat, light and air, and terpenes are the first thing to go. Keep the jar closed, keep it out of a sunny window, and a refrigerator is fine for anything you are not getting through quickly. Let it come back to room temperature before opening so condensation does not form inside.
Extracts go out the same day to every neighborhood on the island, packed so nothing warms up on the way.
Crosstown through the middle, that is Hell's Kitchen and Hudson Yards, Midtown by the Public Library and Rockefeller Center, and Midtown East out to Turtle Bay and the UN. Chelsea sits just below, along the High Line and Chelsea Piers.
Up the West Side we run to Columbus Circle, Lincoln Center and Riverside Park on the Upper West Side, then Morningside Park and 125th Street in Central Harlem, and up to Bennett Park and the Cloisters in Washington Heights.
Up the East Side we run to Museum Mile, the Guggenheim and Gracie Mansion on the Upper East Side, and into East Harlem around El Barrio and Marcus Garvey Park.
Below Fourteenth Street we cover Greenwich Village and Jefferson Market, the East Village and St Marks Place, SoHo and TriBeCa along Spring Street and Canal, and the Financial District from Fulton Center to the Seaport and Battery Park.
Prepaid online by debit card or bank transfer through Aeropay. New York law does not allow a delivery driver to take cash, so the order is settled before it leaves us and the driver only checks your ID.
Concentrates are the category most worth buying in person, at least the first few times. Consistency, terpene profile and what your rig can actually handle are easier to sort out across a counter than through a product page. Order ahead on the menu and collect at 862 9th Ave, or walk in and talk it through. We take cash, debit and Aeropay in store.
