Flower is still the heart of this shop. Everything else on the menu started here, and it is the category where the difference between a good grower and a lazy one shows up fastest. Most menus lead with THC percentage. It is the least useful number on the label. Low twenties flower smokes beautifully when it has been dried slowly and cured properly, and badly handled thirty percent flower tastes like hay. What separates them is cure, and you can read it before you light up.
Look at the trichomes, the frosted resin heads on the surface of the bud. You want them intact and cloudy rather than clear or amber, and you want them still standing rather than knocked off into the bottom of the bag. Squeeze a bud gently. It should give and spring back. If it crumbles to dust it was dried too fast. If it feels damp it will not burn evenly and it will not keep.
Then there is the smell. Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that shape how a strain actually feels, and they tell you more than the indica or sativa label ever will. Limonene reads bright and citrus forward. Myrcene is the earthy, herbal note common in heavier evening strains. Caryophyllene brings the peppery edge. Pinene smells like a Christmas tree and tends to feel clearer. Two strains both labelled hybrid can behave nothing alike depending on which of these dominates, which is why our staff will ask what you liked last time rather than which category you want.
The three way split is shorthand and nothing more. It describes plant shape, not effect. Modern genetics have been crossed so often that nearly everything on a New York shelf is a hybrid of some description. Use the labels to narrow the field, then choose on terpene profile and on how a grower's previous drops treated you.
Nuggs are the larger, denser buds from the upper canopy. Smalls are the smaller buds from lower down the same plant, trimmed and cured identically. Chemically they are the same flower. They simply did not get the same light, so they finished smaller and they cost less. If you grind before you smoke, smalls are the smartest buy on any menu. If you care about how the jar looks, pay for nuggs.
Weights run from a gram up. An eighth is 3.5 grams, a quarter is 7, a half ounce is 14, an ounce is 28. Buying larger almost always brings the per gram price down, which is worth knowing if you have a strain you return to.
Flower degrades through light, heat, air and time. Keep it in glass rather than plastic, somewhere dark and cool, and leave the humidity pack in. Around sixty two percent relative humidity is the sweet spot. Too dry and the terpenes flash off and the smoke gets scratchy. Too wet and you are inviting mould. A jar kept properly holds up for months. One left on a sunny windowsill is noticeably worse in a fortnight.
The run starts at 9th Avenue and works outward. Hell's Kitchen and the blocks around Port Authority and Restaurant Row go out first, then Midtown across to Herald Square, Koreatown and the Public Library, and Midtown East through Turtle Bay and Tudor City.
South of that we take Chelsea past Chelsea Piers and Little Island, then Greenwich Village around Jefferson Market and Christopher Street, the East Village through Alphabet City and Astor Place, and SoHo and TriBeCa down Broadway and Spring Street to Duane Park. The Financial District is the far end of that leg, from Bowling Green and Fulton Center out to the Seaport.
North runs up both sides of the park. The Upper West Side by Columbus Circle and the Cathedral of St John the Divine, the Upper East Side through Yorkville and past Gracie Mansion, then Central Harlem around Marcus Garvey Park and Striver's Row, East Harlem by La Marqueta, and Washington Heights to Bennett Park and the bridge.
